The Third Generation of Corneal Transplantation
Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (“DMEK”) is the latest refinement and innovative technique for endothelial keratoplasty.
DMEK is a surgical technique of Endothelial Keratoplasty, wherein only donor Descemet’s membrane & endothelium is transplanted into the recipient eye. It restores the corneal function without any change in its anatomic structure. DMEK can be performed via a 2.8mm incision, minimal induction of astigmatism, and better refractive outcomes when combined with cataract surgery & IOL implantation.
Apart from unprecedented visual outcomes, DMEK provides additional advantages such as a near perfect restoration of the corneal anatomy, low complication rates and promising graft survival rates.
